Adopt-A-Pet Program at Wheeler Memorial Library - Orange, MA

posted Feb 21, 2016, 5:13 PM by Meg Johnson

BY: CAMERON WOODCOCK ADN STAFF REPORTER ORANGE — Upwards of 30 children and their caregivers gathered at the Wheeler Memorial Library Thursday to learn about responsible pet care, including the need to allow animals time to adjust to their new homes and to schedule regular appointments with the veterinarian. Children were also encouraged to adopt from shelters whenever possible, and that above all, animals require love from their human companions. The program was presented by Animal Care and Education of Central Massachusetts (ACE) and education coordinator Jessica Demeo, and also included a demonstration, aided by a costumed dog, on how children should cautiously approach animals with which they are unacquainted. Following the presentation, participants officially “adopted” a pet, choosing from a selection of donated Beanie Babies and receiving a certificate of adoption, collar and house, as well as a journal to document life with their newly named companion. The adoption exercise, in addition to begin fun, teaches children a sense of responsibility, said Rick Rossi, president of the nonprofit ACE, which is now in its second year offering the educational program to school-age children and their families. Rossi and his three-person team have also presented to schools, 4-H clubs and Girl Scouts troops, among other audiences. Jason Sullivan-Flynn, who was installed as children’s librarian five weeks ago, enlisted the participation of ACE, having previously worked with the group in the same capacity.

Spring Fosters Needed

posted Mar 21, 2014, 4:35 PM by Meg Johnson   [ updated Oct 10, 2014, 5:34 AM ]

Fitchburg Friends of Felines and ACE Central MA, groups that assist the local animal shelters in caring for cats and dogs, are seeking foster families to assist with temporary home placements. "In the warm months, we get more pregnant cats and abandoned kittens," explains Kathy Goguen of FFF.

"We need families with some pet experience who can help take care of these animals while we try to find them homes."

Fitchburg Animal Shelter will provide supplies as needed. For an application to foster, contact info@fitchburgfriendsoffelines.org.
